Snoring & Sleep Apnea

Do you wake up just as tired as when you went to bed? If so, you could be one of the millions of Americans who suffers from sleep apnea. With this condition, breathing stops for periods of 10 seconds or longer, repeatedly during sleep, and the deep sleep that allows you to feel rested gets interrupted. These disruptions in your sleep can occur from 5 to 30 times or more an hour.
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, or OSAS, is the most common type of sleep apnea. In patients with OSAS, soft tissues inhibit free airflow during sleep, which causes the brain to send a message to the body to wake up and breathe. Central sleep apnea, a less common type of sleep apnea, happens when the area of your brain that controls your breathing doesn't send the correct signals to your breathing muscles.
Dr. Siegel will perform a complete evaluation to determine if you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. With a pharyngometer and rhinometer, we can measures airflow through the nose and mouth airway, which will help us measure your condition. Dr. Sigel is one of only a few dentists in Florida with a pharyngometer, a highly advanced technology. After your assessment, Dr. Siegel may recommend non-surgical therapy to correct the problem, including a cPAP mask or dental appliance to reposition your tongue and keep airway open. When necessary, we will refer patients to a medical doctor for more testing.
While snoring is a common side effect of sleep apnea, not all sleep apnea patients snore. Snoring is a sound produced by vibrations of tissues in the throat. If you snore, Dr. Sigel can determine the cause and recommend therapy. In many cases, snoring is also caused by a partially obstructed airway. The same non-surgical therapy used for sleep apnea patients may help alleviate your snoring.
